Chocolate pop cake recipe

Today, I wanted to bake something sweet, fun, and pretty that allowed me and my kids tasty and creative hours. So I decided to try cake pops recipe!

Making them is easier than whipping a whole truffle cake out, and at the same time, enjoyable and engaging. My kids personally love it when we get to the decoration part!

The final result is a treat, both to your eyes and tongue! They are so cute, tiny, and delicious.

What’s better is that I have found an easier way to make cake pops without having to use cake mix or ‘making cake from scratch’ when short on time.

There’s an easy escape. Here’s the secret!

There are three ways you can prepare cake pop’s base.

1.  Cake pop recipe with cake mix: I love cake mix, but they do leave quite a lot of leftovers. Plus, I can only create one type of cake mix at a time.

2.  Making cake from scratch: Not only does “making cake from scratch” leave you leftovers, they are also time-consuming and require precision. Baking from scratch is a delight but it’s not always the best option when you are short on time.

3.  My third and most favorite option— loaf cakes (Pound cake): Yes, it’s that simple! I get down to the nearest bakery and purchase 2-3 different flavors of loaf cakes. I prefer loaf cakes because they don’t leave behind a lot of leftovers.

Pound cake is your best option, but a few more ingredients (like blueberries, raisins, dry fruits, etc) aren’t a problem either. Avoid cakes with cream/chocolate/melted coatings.

You need a drier base and anything melted or drippy will soften your dough and make it hard to create balls.

If you already have buttercream, skip this section.

Recipe for cake pops:

Prepare fresh vanilla buttercream.

 1.  Now, of course, you can purchase buttercream, but it’s so easy to make at home. All you need is unsalted butter, powdered sugar, a tablespoon of vanilla extract, and fresh cream.

 2.  Whisk the butter for 3-4 minutes or until smooth and soft.

3.  Add three cups of powdered sugar, whisk together.

4.  Add one tablespoon of vanilla extract and fresh cream. Mix again. The buttercream is ready! The consistency should be thick and non-drippy.

5.  Store in the fridge and get back to the cakes.

Crumble the cake, Make Cake Balls

6.  After removing the caramelized layer, you want to get to crumbling. It’s good if your cake is on the drier side, that’s what you want.

7.  In a bowl, crumble the cake with your hands. You don’t want to leave any chunks behind.

8.  I used a strainer to ensure my cake is evenly crumbled.

9.  Next, bring the fresh buttercream out and add one scoop at a time.

10.  Mix until it’s evenly distributed. You want to attain a wet sand-like consistency for the crumbled cake. So, add buttercream until you reach a wet sand-like texture.

11.  The cake pop base is ready!

12.  Make 1- 1½ inch cake balls and assemble them on baking tray. Use a parchment paper.

Assemble the cake pops

Pro-tip: Many try to stick the candy sticks into the cake balls right before dipping them in chocolate, but I personally think it’s better if your candy stick is fixed in the cake ball properly long before the final stage.

Add candy sticks to these balls before freezing them.

11.  To add the candy stick, first stick it inside the ball but not too deep.

12.  Take the stick out, dip the stick in melted chocolate, and fuse it back in the cake ball. Seal it with liquid chocolate. Set aside!

13.  Do the same for all the cake balls.

14.  Put them in the freezer for an hour.

Melt the meltables: Chocolate/candy melts/etc.

Okay! Don’t try to melt your chocolate directly! I did it and it completely burned my chocolate instead of melting it. The result was awful, dry, and sand-like. You want soft, flowy liquid. That should be the goal.

To attain gooey chocolate melts, you need to use a double boiler. And before you think you need to go back to the market, hold on! You can make a double boiler right at your home using two containers.

The first one goes on the stove with water in it, and the second one goes on top of the first container. The method uses steam instead of direct heat to melt the chocolate. Ensure your second container is bowl-shaped.

The second container is where you put the candy melts/chocolate cubes, etc. Once it starts to melt, stir it constantly.
Pro-tip: If you don’t have a cake pop stand. Just take a small glass, fill it with rice to the brim. You can stick the cake pops there.

(After transferring melted chocolate to the cup; I kept it on the double boiler to maintain its liquid state.)

15.  Melt the chocolate and transfer it in a small cup. It should be small but broad enough to properly dip the balls.

16.  Bring the refrigerated cake balls out.

17.  You want to be gentle for this step. Slightly dip the ball in the melted chocolate. Swirl it in the cup slowly. Be very slow. Push your way inside while swirling to coat the balls completely.

18.  Getting the ball out of chocolate is tricky. Tilt the cup, get a gentle hold on the stick, move it clockwise and pull it out. Let the additional chocolate drip away.

19.  Stick the cake pop inside the rice-filled glass. Let it tilt towards the edge.

20.  Do the same for all cake pops.

Pro-tip: Don’t panic if the ball breaks out of the stick and stays behind in melted chocolate. Use a spoon to scoop it out. Serve it on a tray, sprinkle your favorite sprinkles and enjoy! Life’s too short to panic, creativity is everywhere.

21.  Garnish them with different sprinklers. I used round colorful sprinkles, crushed almonds, and coconut dust. All three are our favorites. You can switch it up and use what’s delicious to you.

Easy, right?

The Starbucks recipe is pretty simple and similar to the once I shared above. I like chocolate, So I made that first. For Starbucks cake pops, you need a vanilla cake base. You can get it at the bakery or use cake mix. I will always choose bakery-baked choices over cake mix!

Instead of brown or white chocolate melts, you want to choose pink candy melts to create a matching starbucks cake pop dupe.
